FIELD: organic chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: improved method of producing ethylene carbonate used as a solvent for polymers, an extractant for aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as for the synthesis of various plasticizers, modifiers, polymers, monomers, and plant protection products. The method of producing ethylene carbonate involves the interaction of ethylene oxide with carbon dioxide in the presence of a catalyst in the form of potassium iodide and is characterized by the interaction of ethylene oxide with carbon dioxide being carried out at a temperature of 95–98 °C, pressure of 3.5–3.8 MPa, and potassium iodide is used as a catalyst in a concentration of 3.1⋅10-2 mol per liter of ethylene oxide with a modifying additive in the form of iodine with a concentration of 3.9–6.3⋅10-3 gram atom of iodine per liter of ethylene oxide.
EFFECT: reduction of energy consumption, increasing the conversion of ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide, and also increasing the yield of ethylene carbonate.
