FIELD: petrochemical field.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a catalyst composition used in the process of oligomerisation of ethylene to linear alpha-olefins (LAO), as well as to a method for production thereof. Described is a catalyst composition for producing linear alpha-olefins, comprising a) zirconium carboxylate, wherein a) is a product of the reaction of zirconium (IV) chloride with a carboxylic acid and contains aromatic ketones, characterized by that the concentration of aromatic ketones in the catalyst composition is not more than 100 wt ppm. Method of producing said catalyst composition includes the following steps: a) mixing a carboxylic acid and an aromatic solvent; b) adding zirconium (IV) chloride in portions to the carboxylic acid mixture in the presence of an aromatic solvent to obtain a reaction mixture; c) heating and holding the reaction mixture at reaction temperature to obtain a reaction product containing zirconium carboxylate. Described also is a method of producing linear alpha-olefins by oligomerisation of ethylene in the presence of the above catalyst composition and a cocatalyst.

EFFECT: reduced amount of secondary polymer during oligomerisation of ethylene, as well as achieving high degree of conversion during further processing of LAO into polyethylene or polyalphaolefins: polyoctene, polydecene or copoly (octene-decene).
