FIELD: catalytic compositions.

SUBSTANCE: present invention is related to a catalyst composition for the oligomerization of ethylene to 1-octene. The proposed composition contains: a chromium (III) compound, an activator or cocatalyst and a ligand having the formula:

, where each Ar1 and Ar2 independently represent a phenyl group or a substituted phenyl group, n is 0 or 1, and m = n +3. A method for producing 1-octene from ethylene using the specified catalyst composition is also proposed.

EFFECT: proposed catalytic composition makes it possible to obtain 1-octene with high selectivity and degree of purity.
