FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an audio device and method of processing audio and, in particular, but not exclusively, to use of such device and method to support an augmented/virtual reality application. Audio device comprises receiver (201) receiving data describing audio scene. Data contain audio data for a set of audio elements corresponding to audio sources in said scene, and also contain metadata containing at least a conversion property indicator for audio reproduction for a first audio element from the set of audio elements. First transducer (205) for reproduction converts audio elements for reproduction by generating a first set of audio signals for a set of acoustic systems, and second transducer (207) for reproduction converts audio elements for reproduction by generating a second set of audio signals for headphones. In addition, selector (209) is configured to select between a first transducer for reproduction and a second transducer for reproduction for transformation and reproduction of at least a portion of the first audio element in response to a first transformation property for reproducing audio.

EFFECT: enabling improved perception of virtual/mixed reality due to hybrid conversion of audio signals for playback through acoustic systems and headphones.
