FIELD: fiber optics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to active optical fibers and devices using active optical fibers. Active optical fiber has a central part surrounded by an annular active core. Fiber has a tapered longitudinal profile providing a single-mode portion and a multi-mode portion. Annular core can have low birefringence, achieved, for example, by rotation (twisting) of the fiber preform in the process of making the fiber. Refraction index of the annular core can be higher than the refraction indices of the central part and layer(s) of the cladding surrounding the annular core. Active optical fiber provides selective generation or amplification of light modes with orbital angular momentum (OAM). In addition, the fiber has a large mode field diameter (MFD) and is not sensitive to internal heating or environmental effects.
EFFECT: high optical power of the fiber.
