FIELD: optics.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used for switching a periodic pattern on the surface of amorphous thin films of phase-variable chalcogenide materials. Essence of the invention consists in the fact that an optical device for switching a periodic pattern on the surface of amorphous thin films of phase-changing chalcogenide materials includes a resistive heating element—a microheater, wherein the microheater has a variable-width shape, at the edges of which the width has a maximum value of not more than 400 mcm, and as the distance from the edge to the center also begins to decrease in the central area, where a thin film of a phase-variable chalcogenide material with thickness of 10 to 100 nm and an area of not more than 0.01 mm2, reaches its minimum value of not more than 250 mcm, wherein the width of the narrow region varies in proportion to the wide one.
EFFECT: providing the possibility of modulating an optical signal due to diffraction of light on a periodic pattern formed on the surface of phase-variable chalcogenide films using a beam of ultrashort laser pulses.
