SUBSTANCE: invention relates to image encoding means. Entropy decoding a plurality of entropy slices in an entropy encoded data stream to reconstruct an array of samples. Each of the plurality of entropy slices corresponds to one row of the plurality of rows of the array of samples. Each of the plurality of lines has the same number of blocks. For the current entropy slice, initialising a first probability estimate for the current entropy slice before decoding the first block of the current line corresponding to the current entropy slice, based on a second probability estimate obtained after the entropy decoding of the previously decoded block of the previous row corresponding to the previous entropy slice is completed. First block is the leftmost block of the current line, and the previously decoded block is adjacent to the first block, and the current and previous lines are consecutive lines of the array of samples. Entropy decoding is performed, during the entropy decoding continuation phase, using the first probability estimate along the entropy coding trajectory going from left to right along the current line.
EFFECT: high efficiency of encoding images.
