FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, which can be used as an antioxidant of a number of sterically hindered phenols, and also act as a promising compound for further synthesis of antioxidant structures of a more complex structure. Method is carried out in heterogeneous conditions by bubbling solution of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol in tert-butyl alcohol with gaseous formaldehyde released as a result of paraform depolymerisation. Process is carried out for 20 minutes at temperature of 25 °C. Crystallisation of 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol is carried out by adding water to the reaction mass and cooling to 5-10 °C or by distillation of the tert-butanol-water azeotrope, followed by washing the crystals of the substance with n-hexane and further drying.
EFFECT: reduced time for carrying out the process.
