FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to production of carbon materials modified with organosilicon compounds with high hydrophobicity, and can be used in chemical industry for making low-density carbon sorbents of hydrocarbons from water surface, and graphite foil, having high sealing ability to water, steam and aqueous media (solutions, emulsions, dispersions, etc.). Method of producing a hydrophobic material based on thermally expanded graphite modified with organosilicon compounds involves the following steps: (A) impregnating intercalated graphite with a composition containing at least one organosilicon compound selected from the group consisting of alkyl-substituted and phenyl-substituted silanes and polyalkyl- and polyphenylsiloxanes, aqueous ammonia solution and an organic solvent, with the following weight ratio of components, wt.pts.: organosilicon compound 1, aqueous ammonia solution 0.001-0.15, organic solvent 1-10 and with ratio of weight of intercalated graphite to weight of impregnating composition equal to 1:(0.02-5), (B) removing excess liquid phase; (C) drying the mixture obtained in accordance with step (B) to a granular state and (D) thermal treatment of dried mixture from step (C) at temperature from 300 to 1,000 °C to obtain particles of thermally expanded graphite modified with organosilicon compounds.

EFFECT: obtaining hydrophobic thermally expanded graphite with improved hydrophobic characteristics; modified graphite at the stage of production can be made with minimum labour and costs using a simple and technological method.
