FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to chemical industry and can be used in making graphite foil, sorbents and catalysts. Method of producing graphite foam modified with fine particles of metals or alloys includes steps (A)–(C). Step (A) comprises holding particles of intercalated graphite compounds with at least one modifying metal chloride (IGCMC) in at least one liquid amine reducing agent, selected from a group containing ammonia, methylamine and ethylamine, for a period of time providing for the introduction of the reducing agent between the graphite layers to form an IGCMC compound with a reducing agent of steps I–IV. Holding at this stage is carried out at temperatures not exceeding the boiling point of the amine reducing agent. IGCMC includes at least one chloride of modifying metal selected from triad of iron and copper. At step (B), excess amine reducing agent is removed from the obtained compounds. At step (C), said compounds are thermally treated in an inert atmosphere at 700–1,100 °C. Before step (C), said compounds can be further compacted, for example, by pressing. Obtained graphite foam is particles of thermally expanded graphite with fine particles of at least one metal or alloy uniformly distributed over their surface with size from 0.01 to 3 mcm. Part of said fine metal particles can be combined into agglomerates.
EFFECT: invention makes it possible to simplify the hardware design of the process and reduce its duration by reducing the number of stages and eliminating the use of a reducing atmosphere during thermal expansion in the thermal shock mode.
