FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to salts of 3-(4-methylphenyl)sulfonylpropionic acid of formula (I), where (1) X+ = K+, (2) X+ = NH4+, (3) X+ = (C2H5)3HN+ and (4) X+ = OHCH2CH2H3N+. Invention also relates to a method of producing salts of 3-(4-methylphenyl)sulfonylpropionic acid, which consists in two-step one-pot synthesis of 3-(4-methylphenyl)sulphonylpropionic acid by reduction of p-toluenesulphonyl chloride with sodium sulphite in the presence of alkali to sodium p-toluenesulphinate at temperature of 70 °C for 3 hours in an aqueous medium. Then the reaction mixture is cooled to temperature of 30-40 °C, reacting with acrylic acid in presence of acetic acid, reaction mixture is held at temperature of 20-25 °C for 3-5 hours in an aqueous medium, followed by neutralization with potassium hydroxide, 25% aqueous solution of ammonia, triethylamine and ethanolamine. Salts of 3-(4-methylphenyl)sulphonylpropionic acid are used in agriculture as plant growth regulators.

EFFECT: salts of 3-(4-methylphenyl)-sulphonylpropionic acid, a method for production thereof and use as plant growth regulators in agriculture.
