SUBSTANCE: invention relates to computer engineering for processing audio data. Technical result is achieved due to the steps of determining upmix metadata containing a set of parameters for generating, based on the downmix signal, a reconstructed multichannel signal containing N channels, wherein the upmix metadata is determined depending on whether the current frame is an active frame or an inactive frame; upmix metadata into a bitstream, determining covariance, in particular, a covariance matrix for a current frame of a multichannel input signal by performing time smoothing on a plurality of frames from a sequence of frames depending on whether the current frame is an active frame or an inactive frame; and determining one or more upmix metadata parameters based on covariance for the current frame.
EFFECT: providing perceptually pleasant transitions between active and inactive sections of a multichannel audio signal.
