SUBSTANCE: invention relates to hydraulic engineering and can be used to prevent fish from entering hydraulic power plant water intakes and other large water intakes. Method consists in the fact that protective device (3) is created, which is orderly equipped with the underwater landscape heterogeneity increasing man-made elements (7, 8), attractive for settling habitation of pack ichthyophages, and use them as hunting camps and ambush of pack ichthyophages, wherein using the orderly arrangement of man-made elements (7, 8) of increasing the heterogeneity of the underwater landscape, grouping ichthyophages are combined along the entire water intake front, form the synergistic set of natural signals accompanying the collective hunting of pack ichthyophages, thereby on the way of fish approaching the water intake, creating the natural source of biological hazard, by means of which viable individuals are deterred from water intake, and non-viable are recycled. Scattering ability of pack ichthyophages is monitored and when it is reduced to increase food activity of pack ichthyophages and the resumption of the viable fish individual scaring effect, a stimulating signal is supplied, similar to the natural signal accompanying the group hunting of pack ichthyophages, but exceeding it in intensity.

EFFECT: high efficiency of preventing viable fish individuals from entering the water intake.
