FIELD: heat engineering in metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: strand-type furnace has bath with melt, precombustion chamber with secondary air burners and nozzles, smoke discharge channel in precombustion chamber doom, intermediate doom, mounted in precombustion chamber in front of smoke discharge channel entrance. Intermediate doom length is 0.25-0.5 of bath length, precombustion chamber width is 0.5-0.75 of bath width. Secondary air nozzles are disposed in precombustion chamber along its length in equally spaced relation below its doom between intermediate doom and smoke discharge channel entrance. Furnace is heated by gas fuel through step-by-step burning of fuel in burners and nozzles. Method involves supplying air through burners at melting period with flow rate coefficient α=0.8-0.9 of 0.8-0.9 and through nozzles with flow rate coefficient α=(0.2-0.1) of (0.2-0.1). During period of applying coating air is supplied through burners with flow rate coefficient α=(0.4-0.5) of (0.4-0.5), through nozzles with flow rate coefficient α=(0.5-0.3) of (0.5-0.3) and through nozzles above intermediate doom with α=(0.1-0.2) of (0.1-0.2). EFFECT: reduced oxidation of fusible metal, for example zinc melt, and outburst of nitric oxide with flue gases, reduced construction of zinc melt, simplified maintenance of furnace by eliminating formation of skull on walls and reduced consumption of fuel. 3 cl, 3 dwg, 1 tbl
