FIELD: production of carboxylic acids. SUBSTANCE: method for production of 5,6- acenaphthene dicarboxylic acid includes carboxylating the 5,6-dichloro- acenaphthene at 55-65 C and pressure of carbon oxide of 1 atm in methanol in the presence of cobalt carbonyl (catalyst) in the amount of 0.5-5.0 mas. % as per 5,6-dichloroacenaphthene, benzyl chloride (cocatalyst) and base. Process is conducting by gradual dosing of benzyl chloride at the rate of 1-6 mole/mole of cobalt carbonyl per hour at initial introduction of cocatalyst in the amount of 2-4 mole/mole of cobalt carbonyl, further acidification of hydrolysis and filtration of desired product. Additionally separated from filtrate after separation of desired product is phenylacetic acid. Method provides for increase of conversion of 5,6-dichloroacenaphthene by 1-12% and desired product yield by 1.1-10.7%. EFFECT: increased conversion of 5,6-dichloroacenaphthene and yield of desired product, and higher efficiency of process. 1 tbl
