FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: process of melting of carbide block is carried out in two stages. In the first stage, use is made of pelletized charge, in which amount of reducing agent exceeds that of required by stoichiometry by 3-10%, and in the second stage, use is made of pelletized charge in which the amount of reducing agent exceeds the required amount by stoichiometry by 0.1-2.5%. EFFECT: reduced power consumption, increased yield of satisfactory product and higher efficiency. 4 tbl
