FIELD: production of metal carbides in electric furnaces. SUBSTANCE: vanadium carbide is produced from pentaoxide, divanadium and reducing agent by extrusion with subsequent charging into an electric furnace, carbide block smelting, crushing, fine grinding and extraction of free carbon and impurities. The specific feature of invention is additional introduction of limestone to relations between carbon and divanadium equal to (0.48-0.55):1 and (0.45-0.47): 1; charging is accomplished by alternation of layers with thermal treatment, and the fine-ground product is graded by water at H:L = 1: (1-5) or by 2 to 10.1-th solution of mineral acids at H:L = 1:(1-10) and heating up to 40 C. EFFECT: facilitated procedure. 4 tbl
