FIELD: ceramic industry. SUBSTANCE: the process comprises mixing an inert or reactive filler with a powder of at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Al, Si, Sn, Ti, Zr and Hf, molding a semi-finished body, heating it in a reaction atmosphere to a temperature which is higher than the melting point of the metal, but lower than the melting point of the metal-to-reaction medium product. In this case, the mixture contains at least 30% of the base metal with an inert filler and at least 50% of the base metal with a reactive filler. The semi-finished body has a preferable pore volume of 25-45%. After the heating period, the semi-finished body is kept for a time sufficient to fill up the pore volume with the base metal and the base metal-to-reaction medium product to form a dense layer of the reaction product on the surface of the semi-finished body. The base metal may be aluminium alloyed with at least one element selected from the group consisting of Mg, Zn, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, B, Na, Ca, P, V and REM. A barrier agent selected from the group consisting of calcium sulfate or silicate, Portland element, semihydrate gypsum, wollastonite or mixtures thereof may be applied to at least some surface of the semi-finished body.
