FIELD: manufacture of compound articles. SUBSTANCE: bar of source metal is placed into the layer of inert heat-resistant material or in such a way that it would be in touch with a briquette molded from the same material, and heated in a gaseous medium capable of reacting with the source metal in question. The temperature of heating should exceed the melting point of source metal but it should be lower than the melting point of the reaction product. The heating time should be enough to have the reaction completed and making it possible for metal to migrate toward the medium through consecutively forming layers. At the same time, gas-permeable protective means is applied to part of metal; however this means should not be permeable either for metal or its product of reaction with gaseous medium. The protective means can be placed at a desired distance from the bar or used to partly fill the space between the bar and the layer (or briquette) of inert heat-resistant material. Dispersed inert heat-resistant material or briquette thereof are placed on the surfaces of bar which are not protected with the protective means. The protective means should be chosen from the following group: calcium carbonate, calcium silicate, Portland-cement, tricalcium phosphate, their combinations and stainless steel. Such fillers as aluminium oxide and silicon carbide can be also introduced into the protective means. Introduction of activators is also provided.
