FIELD: chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: reagent 1: 5-(o-, m- or p-tolyl)pent-1 or -2-ene, or 5-phenylhex-1- or -2-ene with water content 0.5 wt. -%, not more. Reaction conditions: heating at 148-250 C, under pressure providing liquid-phase of process in the presence of catalyst - ultrastable crystalline zeolite of type Y showing mole ratio SiO2/Al2O3 = (4-10):1; pore size corresponds 12-membered oxygen-containing cycle and size of a single cell is at Na content 0.005-3.5% as for metal of zeolite mass. Catalyst is used mainly in H-form with addition 0.05-3% one of noble metal: Pt, Pd, Ir or Rh as for metal to the catalyst mass. The latter can contain also 0.01-5% transient metal: Cu, Sn, Au, Pb or Ag as for metal to the catalyst mass. Catalyst can be applied on the carrier - inert porous refractory inorganic oxide and contain less 15% adsorbed water as for zeolite mass. In the process liquid mixture is formed containing at least 80% a) 1,5-; 1,6-; 2,5- or 2,6-dimethyltetraline or their mixture from 5-(o-tolyl)pent-1 or 2-ene; b) 1,5-; 1,6-; 1,7-; 1,8-; 2,5-; 2,7- or 2,8-dimethyltetraline or their mixture from 5-(m-tolyl)pent-1 or 2-ene; c) 1,7-; 1,8-; 2,7- or 2,8-dimethyltetraline or their mixture from 5-(p-tolyl)pent-1 or 2-ene; d) 1,3-; 1,4-; 2,3-; 5,7-; 5,8- or 6,7-dimethyltetraline or their mixture from 5-phenyl-hex-1- or 2-ene..
