FIELD: petrochemistry. SUBSTANCE: the product is a mixture of 2,6 and 2,7-diethylnaphthalenes. Reagent 1: a naphthalene and/or 2-ethylnaphthalene. Reagent 2: the ethylating agent is 1,2,4-triethylbenzene, tetraethylbenzenes (preferably a mixture of isomers) and/or pentaethylbenzene. Reaction conditions: in the presence of an Lewis acid catalyst such as AlCl3, AlBr3, SbF5, TaCl5 or AlCl3 complex with ethyl chloride or ethyl bromide (preferably AlCl3 or said complex) at a reagent 1 to reagent 2 molar ratio of 1:(1-10), more preferably 1:(2- 5) and in catalyst to reagent 1 ratio of (0.05-0.2):1, a temperature between -10 to +100 C, more preferably between -5 and +20 C. The catalyst is used preferably in the form of a solution in methylene chloride or chloroform. Reagent 1 and 2 are dissolved in one of the solvents such as methylene chloride, chlorobenzene, 1,2- dichloroethane, benzene. EFFECT: improved preparation process. 7 cl, 11 tbl
