FIELD: railway rolling stock; reconditioning of automatic coupler parts. SUBSTANCE: coupler key is subjected to plastic deformation in closed press tool by applying impact by hammer to nonworking surface of key. Then is hardened at 890-910 C with 1-hour holding, cooled in oil and tempered at 590-610 C at 3-hour holding and then cooled in water. Used deformation of key is press tool whose die and punch have longitudinal rib on working surfaces located in center, or dies and punch whose working surfaces are made convex with preset radius of curvature.
