FIELD: cartography. SUBSTANCE: method includes identification of objects on locality on starting cartographic material, taking of metric information on objects in the form of array of coordinates and of semantic symbol information, recording of obtained information on medium in file system. Classification code, localization character, dimensions, length of object legend are determined in process of identification of objects and taking of metric and semantic information, length of legend is compared with length of recording field of file, information on object is recorded in first file provided that length of legend does not exceed length of recording field of file. Access address of metric information on object including number of metrics dots and characteristics of object are also recorded in first file as well as value of characteristic code and numerical value of characteristic. Information on dots of object metrics, on dots of metrics of object legend are recorded in second file on condition that length of legend exceeds length of recording field of file. Information on symbols of legend is also entered in second file. Specified operations are repeated for each of objects. EFFECT: improved authenticity of information prepared for digital maps.
