FIELD: metallurgy. SUBSTANCE: metal is fed to the mould. Slag mixture is fed to the metal meniscus. The temperature of the mould working walls is measured over the length and periphery of the ingot inside the mould at the distance of 0.7-1.0 and 1.4-2.2 from the metal meniscus respectively. In casting, the temperature at the top measuring level is measured. When the measured temperature exceeds the working temperature by 10-25% the temperature at the bottom measuring level is measured after a time period defined by the relationship presented in the invention description. If the bottom level temperature exceeds the working temperature by the same value as at the top level, the flow rate of the slag mixture is increased by 3-35% of the working flow rate. EFFECT: simplified method. 1 tbl
