FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: sulfur is produced from gases containing hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide. For this purpose gases are passed successively through three layers of a catalyst operating alternately at a temperature above and below the dew point of sulfur. Periodically, every 5-30 h, the sequence of gas passage is changed so that the third layer along the gas flow becomes the first one, the first layer becomes the second one and the second layer, the third one. The reaction gases are delivered into the first layer of catalyst along the gas flow at a temperature of 300-400 C, those delivered into the second layer, at 120-200 C, and into the third layer, at 120-160 C. EFFECT: higher efficiency. 2 dwg, 1 tbl
