FIELD: chemical industry, sulphur production from gaseous mixtures of hydrogen sulfide with sulphur dioxide, gas purification to remove sulphur-containing compounds and to recover sulphur. SUBSTANCE: starting reaction gas containing hydrogen sulfide and sulphur dioxide in ratio (2.05-4.0):1 is caused to pass, in succession, through one, two or three catalytic reactors, cooling gas after each reactor and condensing sulphur thus-formed. Partly reacted gas is then mixed with oxygen (or air) and directed at temperature 120-160 C; to one more reactor periodically changing gas supply direction to opposite one. After leaving last reactor, mixture is again cooled to condense sulphur. EFFECT: high recovery percentage of elemental sulphur; improved environmental control. 1 tbl, 2 dwg
