FIELD: machining of high-hardness materials. SUBSTANCE: method involves placing a backing in a movable or stationary position inside a cooled detonation combustion chamber of a high-speed burner system or detonating gun, injecting a protective gas atmosphere, heating to the ignition point of the carbon-containing detonating gas mixture, then replacing the protective atmosphere by a carbon-containing detonating mixture which contains one or more gaseous hydrocarbons and oxygen, then the gas mixtures are again replaced at experimentally selected intervals until a diamond layer of the required thickness is produced. The method can also be realized by the use of a high-speed burner system providing a continuously-burning carbon-containing high-speed flame or by the use of a detonating gun creating an intermittent carbon-containing detonating flame which is directed at a preset speed at the surface of the backing located at a certain distance. EFFECT: higher efficiency. 8 cl, 2 dwg
