FIELD: chemical industry, medicine, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. SUBSTANCE: chitin is treated by sodium hydroxide and monochloroacetic acid (or by its salt), molar ratio of said compounds being 1:(2.6-8.4): (2.3-4). The process is carried out at 66-200 C and pressure 0.2-50 mPa in extruder having two screws, shear stress being 0,3-3H/mm2. Said monochloroacetic acid or its salt are added in solid state or as solution in isopropyl alcohol. Mentioned above treatment of chitin may be carried out at 80-120 C simultaneously with adding or initially chitin may be treated by sodium hydroxide at 8-200 C, then monochloroacetic acid or its salt are added and further treatment takes place at 60-120 C. Sodium salt of monochloroacetic acid is preferred. Preferred ratio of chitin:NaOH:sodium salt of monochloroactetic acid is 1:(2.6-4.4):(2.3-4.0). EFFECT: improves efficiency of the method. 4 cl
