FIELD: diagnostics. SUBSTANCE: while diagnosing piston internal combustion engine 1 linked up to synchronous generator 2, mainly of Diesel-generator sets, by parameters of tightness of combustion chamber shaft of engine is turned with preset rotational speed. Maximal rate of change of pressure of pressure under compression and expansion is measured, index of comparison is calculated and compared with standard index. Shaft of engine is first driven with starter to certain speed, then armature winding of synchronous generator is connected to A.C three-phase main line 5 or to asymmetric three-phase line 10, excitation winding is shorted to resistance 6 and starter is disconnected. As a variant, one of phases of synchronous generator is linked to line through autotransformer 11 or through reactor or through resistance 13 or through capacitive resistance.
