FIELD: distance measurements by using electromagnetic waves; mining and construction engineering, aviation, in all cases when linear measurements are difficult to be made and angular ones are easy to do. SUBSTANCE: signals are coming from two points of object in direction of reflecting surface, echo signals are received on object, and distance is determined by relation between direction of signal radiation and its reception and by known distance between points of their radiation and reception. Visible optical range signals whose radiation axes lie in plane formed by straight line connecting radiation points and straight line crossing distance reading initial point on object and selected point of reflecting surface are used as radiated information signals; directions of radiation axes are varied at each radiation point until they are aligned at selected point of reflecting surface; angles of inclination of radiation axes of signals are recorded, and then distance to mentioned point on radiation surface is determined from given equation.
