FIELD: organic chemistry. SUBSTANCE: unsaturated nitriles, namely acrylonitriles or metacrylonitrile or their mixture is prepared by interaction of propylene, butylene or their mixture with ammonia and with oxygen-containing gas. The process is carried out in steam phase at 300-600 C and at increased temperature in the presence of catalyst. Said catalyst has empirical formula Mo_aBi_bFe_cCo_dNi_eCr_fX_gY_iO_k where X is phosphorous or antimony or its mixture, Y is alkaline metal or their mixture, a=12-14, b=1-5, c=0.5-5, d,e= 0.1-6, f=0.1-4, g=0.1-4, i=0.1-2, k is number being determined by valence of all elements.
