FIELD: water treating. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to treating water, in particular, drinking water, subsoil water and may be used in various areas. Water stream is continuously irradiated with short-wave infrared emission in the wave range 0.75-8 mcm and irradiation intensity 4.68-8.40 W/sq. cm. Energy of emission, when affecting chemical bonds of water impurity constituents, leads to their polymerization, coagulation, and precipitation. Live microorganisms, being optically nontransparent for infrared emission, absorb this emission intensively and perish. EFFECT: increased degree of purification and disinfecting of water. 1 tbl
