FIELD: winding of materials. SUBSTANCE: device for making coils of sheet material without core has first winding roll to which sheet material is fed, second winding roll rotating in one direction with first roll with clearance between rolls through which thin sheet material passes, means for displacement of second winding roll in direction of first winding roll and device for cutting off thin sheet material when roll is full. Special devices are provided to form support surface for roll R2 in process of its formation and located above the clearance between rolls in direction of material feed, Material to be is delivered forward along support rack with driving selvage directed into clearance between three winding rolls rotating in one direction with provision of twisting the driving selvage into spiral to form central portion of roll and to provide friction engagement of rolls with side surface of coil. With increase in diameter of coil, rolls are gradually moved from each other. When winding of coil is completed, coil is brought out of clearance between rolls and material driving selvage is fed into clearance to form new coil. Central portion of coil is formed by engaging its initial layers with two windings rolls. Speed of second roll is maintained higher that speed of first roll and is adequately changed to provide preliminary displacement of coil from clearance between winding rolls to support rack using the displacement to ensure feeding of material into clearance between rolls.
