FIELD: gas purification. SUBSTANCE: invention is aimed at purifying gases from injurious impurities and, in particular, can be used for removing carbon monoxide from gas mixtures in systems of collective and individual protection of respiratory organs. Catalyst is prepared by mixing manganese dioxide and copper oxide with bentonite clay (binder). In the method of invention, copper oxide is mixed with manganese dioxide simultaneously with preparing the former at 50-95 C for 0.5-3.0 h, whereupon primary mixture is combined with binder. Resultant mixture is granulated, granules are dried, crushed, and thermally treated. EFFECT: essentially increased activity. 1 tbl
