METHOD FOR PRODUCING DRINKING WATER Russian patent published in 1997 - IPC

Abstract RU 2083506 C1

FIELD: water purification. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to treatment of natural and waste water that may be used in drinking water production. Method includes ozonation, two-step filtration through grainy filtering carbon material. In the first step, water is passed with velocity 8-10 m/h through mesoporous carbon material with grain size 1.0-3.5 mm, specific surface in respect to nitrogen 13-18 sq. m/g, pore space 0.3- 0.6 cu.cm/g, crushing strength 250-500 kg/cu.cm, and preferred pore size 500 to 2000 , the contact time being 10-15 min. In the second step, water treated in the first-step is passed with velocity 8-15 m/h through mesoporous carbon material with grain size 0.5-2.5 mm, specific surface in respect to nitrogen 450-600 sq. m/g, pore space 0.6-1.0 cu.cm/g, crushing strength 100-350 kg/cu.cm, and preferred pore size 20 to 1000 , the contact time being 10-25 min. Preliminary ozonation of water, in this case, is carried out with ozone concentration 1.5-10 g/cu.m for 25-30 min. Filtering carbon material from the two steps is regenerated by water stream directed from below upward with velocity 15-25 m/h and simultaneously feeding air in amount 2-3 cu.m per 1 cu.m of fed water for 20-30 min with periodicity 24 h. Additional regeneration of second-step carbon material is performed by treating material with boiling water heated by 120-200 C steam passed through water from below upward in amount 0.5-1 kg/h per 1 kg of material for 20-60 min with periodicity 240- 360 h followed by washing the bed with water-air mixture in above- indicated proportion. EFFECT: increased efficiency in removing iron and manganese salts and complexes as well as phenol and its derivatives. 3 cl, 1 dwg, 1 tbl
