FIELD: liquid fuel production. SUBSTANCE: diesel fractions are subjected to hydrorefinement in presence of alumina catalysts preliminarily activated with elementary sulfur, the process being distinguished in the follows. Alumina catalyst packet includes (100-A+B) wt.-% of catalyst where A is predicted average value of aromatic hydrocarbons present in raw material under processing during 12-month period, and B is predicted maximum value of sulfur present in the same material during 24-month period. Catalyst contains 12-19 wt.- % molybdenum oxide and 3-6 wt % cobalt oxide and is prepared by dissolving ammonium paramolybdate in 1.5-20% hydrogen peroxide aqueous solution, mixing resultant solution with cobalt nitrate and aluminium hydroxide followed by shaping, drying, and calcination of product. Second component of catalyst system is alumino-nickel-molybdenum catalyst. EFFECT: optimized choice of catalyst makeup. 3 tbl
