METHOD FOR MANUFACTURE OF MATS FROM MINERAL FILAMENTS Russian patent published in 1997 - IPC

FIELD: production of superlight heat-insulating and soundproofing materials used in aircraft industry, mechanical engineering, ship building etc. SUBSTANCE: method involves forming primary layer from fibrous mass of mineral filaments on feeding surface of first conveyor belt movable at predetermined speed; forming mat with predetermined surface density on feeding surface of second conveyor belt movable at speed below that of first belt; compressing mat to required thickness. Primary layer with density making 1-20% of surface density of final mat is made from mineral filaments having diameter of 0.5-3.0 micron. Prior to forming mat, filaments of primary layer are divided into small portions, that are transformed into suspension state in air, and binder is applied to filament portions by spraying. Upon formation of mat on this belt, volume of this mat is increased. Mat is compressed by double-staged thermal treatment: at the first stage, thermal treatment is conducted at temperature below binder polymerization temperature, at the second stage, thermal treatment of mat is conducted simultaneously with premolding at temperature equal to binder polymerization temperature. At the first stage thermal treatment of mat is conducted at temperature 30-60 C below binder polymerization temperature. Upon formation of mat with predetermined surface density, mat is expanded till density reaches value not in excess of 6 kg/cub m.
