FIELD: chemistry of polymers. SUBSTANCE: present invention describes method of preparation of high molecular weight alpha- olefin polymers, more particularly ethylene homopolymers and ethylene and C₁₃-C₁₂ alpha-olefin copolymers in solution and catalyst for this method. The claimed method is carried out at 105-320 C, catalyst is prepared from titanium tetrahalide compounds, vanadium trihalooxides and organoaluminium compounds. Mixture of catalyst compounds is heat treated at temperature within 180 to 250 C followed by cooling to temperature of lower than 150 C. Vanadium trihalooxide catalyst is thereafter added. The resulting solution is activated with aluminium compound. Catalyst has catalytic activity higher than that of catalysts to which vanadium trihalooxide is either not added or added at temperature higher than 150 C.
