FIELD: polymerization of rubbers, more particularly synthetic rubber industry. SUBSTANCE: resulting polymer is used in the manufacture of addition agents, lubricants, glues and other products. Catalyst composition includes diisobutyl aluminium chloride, carbon tetrachloride and water at molar ratio within 1:0.0005:0.001 to 1:1200:6, and amount of diisobutyl aluminium chloride is from 0.0005 to 1.2 mole per 100 mg of isobutylene. Catalyst makes it possible to obtain low molecular weight polyisobutylene in hydrocarbon solvent (toluene, n-hexane, or the like) at temperature from 0 to 50 C. EFFECT: more efficient preparation method. 1 tbl
