METHOD FOR SELECTING OPTIMUM TACTICAL APPROACH TO TREATMENT OF HYDROCEPHALUS CASES Russian patent published in 1997 - IPC

FIELD: medicine; neurosurgery; treatment of hydrocephalus in patients affected with malignant tumors of brain. SUBSTANCE: neurosurgeon must proceed ass follows: thromboplastic activity of liquor is measured and, if persistent liquor circulation disorders and normal level of thromboplastic activity of liquor are detected, it is necessary to proceed to ventriculovenous or ventriculoperitoneal shunting using draining systems. If increased level of thromboplastic activity of liquor is established, external drainage of liquor system is practised until said parameter is normalized, followed by liquor shunting operation involving implantation of draining systems. In cases when thromboplastic activity of liquor is stably high and is associated with presence of drainage- dependent hypertensive hydrocephalus in patients affected with malignant injuries of cerebrum, liquor circulation is corrected with help of ventriculoperitoneal shunting using draining systems provided with additional barriers in form of absorbing filters. EFFECT: reduced occurrence rate of complications associated with possible metastatic spreading of tumors along draining systems and with blood coagulation disorders.
