FIELD: measurement technology. SUBSTANCE: method includes measurement of object image size in plane of optical instrument image. Optical instrument is moved towards object (or away from it) for definite distance along sighting line of optical instrument, and sizes of image of object being observed are measured again. This done, distance to object is determined by formula: , where No is size of object image before displacement; N(t) is size of object image after displacement; S(t) is distance for which optical instrument is displaced.
