FIELD: coal processing. SUBSTANCE: raw material is supplied in the carrying gas flow, in countercurrent with horizontal gaseous heat carrier, into heating chamber where it is heated to pyrolysis temperature simultaneously losing fine fractions withdrawn by exhaust gases fed into heat-recovery boiler to be burned. Settled down fractions are kept in non-heated pyrolyzer to produce semicoke with 6-12% volatiles, during this period gas-vapor mixture being withdrawn into activator combustion chamber. Semicoke is activated to yield final product, whereas activation gas is directed into heat- recovery boiler. EFFECT: enabled production of most useful medium and coarse fractions of improved-quality activated carbon and increased heat capacity of pyrolysis gas. 3 cl, 1 dwg
