FIELD: internal combustion engines. SUBSTANCE: internal combustion engine has at least one set including first and second cylinders 12 and 14 respectively and corresponding first and second pistons 16 and 18 reciprocating in the cylinders. Displacement of one of the cylinders is greater than displacement of the second one. The pistons are connected with each other so that they move in the cylinders by cycles with the same frequency. Air inlet opening 24 and outlet opening communicate with the first cylinder and fuel-injection nozzle 34 provides for fuel feed into the second cylinder. The engine has also combustion chamber 20 communicating with both the cylinders at least during a part of the expansion stroke. The second piston has head 35 and body part 19. The head is located at a distance from the body part, is connected with it and has edge 37 which is axially relatively small as compared with the distance between the head and the body if seen also in axial direction. Combustion chamber 20 is formed between piston head, body part and side wall 14a of the second cylinder. Gap 128 between head edge 37 and cylinder wall 14a is intended to prevent fuel feed into combustion chamber 20 till the end of compression stroke. Admission means interacting with the second cylinder for passing fuel and/or air into the second cylinder in the course of the admission stroke has a port, which opens to the second cylinder, and valve 31 to control this port.
