FIELD: mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: internal combustion engine has first and second cylinders 12, 14. Displacement of first cylinder 12 is larger than that of second cylinder 14, second cylinder 14 being formed in bottom of first cylinder. First and second pistons, 16 and 18, respectively, can reciprocate in first and second cylinders 12,14. Second piston 18 is made in form of projection on bottom of first piston 16. First cylinder has air intake channel 25 and exhaust channel 27. First fuel source 34 supplies fuel to second cylinder 14. Second piston has bottom 35 arranged at a distance from bottom 36 of first piston and connected with the latter. Bottom has edge 37 whose thickness in axial direction is smaller, as compared with distance from bottom of first piston to bottom of second piston. This provides combustion space 20 between bottoms of pistons and side wall 14a of second cylinder 14 when pistons are in bottom dead center. Combustion space 20 communicates with both cylinders 12, 14 during part of working stroke. EFFECT: enlarged operating capabilities. 33 cl, 17 dwg
