FIELD: mechanical engineering; internal combustion engines. SUBSTANCE: engine has one or more pairs of first and second cylinders, capacity of first cylinder being greater than that of second cylinder, and corresponding pistons reciprocating in cylinders. Second piston has drive rod and divides second cylinder into first space accommodating drive rod of second piston and second space between two pistons. First cylinder has air intake and exhaust branch pipes. Common combustion space is formed between two pistons when pistons are in inner dead center position. Combustion space has second space. Movement arrangements provides flow of gas between first space and combustion space to end of compression stroke, and delaying arrangement delays movement of fuel and air mixture from first space into second space till the end of compression stroke of second piston. Nozzle provides fuel for first space during suction stroke of second piston. Engine has driving arrangement to set second piston into motion. Driving arrangement includes means for holding second piston in inner dead center during part of working stroke of first piston. Invention provides description of method of operation of such engine. Advantage of proposed invention is that both diesel engine and gasoline engine can be converted by changing the design of cylinder head without changing the design of crankcase and transmissions as a whole.
