FIELD: mineral dressing. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to preparing synthetic rutile from titanium-containing ores or concentrates, the process including three principal steps: reduction, removal of iron by leaching or aeration, and removal of other impurities by leaching with strong inorganic acid solution, e. g. hydrochloric or sulfuric acid, on heating. Reduction conditions are controlled to form metal iron, bulk of rutile-containing phase, and small titanium-containing phase with impurities. The latter phase may be metathionate (preferred), anasovite, or pseudo brookite. Reducing agents used are carbon-containing materials or hydrogen-containing gases, e. g. natural or synthesis gas. EFFECT: increased removal (above 80%) of non-reduced iron, magnesium, and manganese oxides, and provided removal of aluminum bulk. 12 cl, 9 tbl
