FIELD: chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: when preparing benzyl alcohol by alkaline hydrolysis of benzyl chloride in aqueous medium at elevated temperature, aqueous salt layer is separated. Said layer is treated in one or two steps with dibenzyl ether which is by-product in synthesis step and is waste product in rectification step at (5-10):1 weight ratio.
