SELF-DRILLING BLIND RIVET AND METHOD OF MAKING HERMETIC JOINT BY MEANS OF SUCH RIVET Russian patent published in 1998 - IPC

FIELD: mechanical engineering; fastenings for permanent joints of parts. SUBSTANCE: rivet shank 2 passes in bush 1 with round flange 4; one end of shank extends beyond 4 and other end is provided with drill 6 tightly connected with end of bush 1 opposite to end having flange. Bush and shank are provided with fastening devices for connection of drill and bush forming rotatable unit. Method consists in making drill 6 rest against one side of blank 8; entire blind rivet (1, 2) is rotated, thus drilling blank 8 right through and forcing bush 1 into hole till flange 4 rests against above-mentioned side of blank 8 simultaneously pulling shank 2 in opposite direction till it breaks in bush 1 fully drawing drill 6 into widened portion of end of bush 1; outer side 12 of widened portion is brought in tight and constant adjoining to above-mentioned opposite side of blank 8. Drill 6 is tightly and constantly connected with nearest end of bush 1 and is held inside widened portion at all times by means of this joint, thus ensuring tight riveted joint.
