FIELD: mechanical engineering; internal combustion engines; devices for starting diesel engines at low ambient temperatures. SUBSTANCE: method comes to preliminary accumulation of mechanical energy in flywheel and subsequent conveying the energy to engine crankshaft. Simultaneously with accumulation of energy in flywheel heating of starting portion of air is provided by positive movement of air in closed circuit. Air is delivered into engine simultaneously with conveying of mechanical energy from flywheel to engine crankshaft. Engine starting device has flywheel connected through controlled clutch with crankshaft and through overrunning clutch, with cranking device and is furnished with air heater including compressor and receiver. Compressor drive shaft is coupled with flywheel, and its output branch pipe is connected with receiver. Two-position pneumatic distributor is installed on output branch pipe. Engine intake pipe, compressor intake branch pipe and drain branch pipe are connected to pneumatic distributor. Controlled clutch and pneumatic distributor selector lever are mechanically intercoupled. EFFECT: improved conditions for forming and igniting of fuel-air mixture, enhanced reliability of starting. 3 cl, 1 dwg
