FIELD: carbon sorbents and catalysts. SUBSTANCE: initial raw material is converted into homogeneous paste, from which granules are formed. The latter are dried, carbonized, activated, washed to remove mineral impurities, and treated with alkali metal hydroxide solutions up to pH 9-12 until alkali metal hydroxide content in carbon (on conversion to alkali metal) is 0.1 to 1.0 wt %. Resultant material is fit for use in organic syntheses and in air-cleaning means. EFFECT: sorbents with narrow activity range obtained. 2 tbl
